What is a Grand Prix?

The Grand Prix originated in 1894 in Paris during a rally. This is where the French name Grand Prix comes from, meaning “Grand Price”. Nowadays the term Grand Prix is mostly known because of Formula 1. Where 20 drivers race for the win during the world championship. These races happen on Sundays.

The oldest circuit existing is the French Grand Prix. The first-ever international motor race, named Grand Prix, was hosted here in 1906.

What is a Grand Prix? It’s a series of races where people race in formula cars in order to win a championship. Usually, these races take place on closed highways however, there are a lot of differences between the circuits.

Some are specially built for Grand Prix (or other automobile events) races, such as the Zandvoort Circuit in The Netherlands. Other Grand Prix locations are for example in an industrial area: the Grand Prix in Australia. Or another unique Grand Prix takes place in Monaco where the drivers race through the city.

The most known Grand Prix is Formula 1. Here, 20 drivers compete to become the world champion. There are races taking place worldwide in different locations. There are about 20 Grand Prix races in total.
